The extensive fortifications preserved here were built on a point of land renamed Mount Independence when begun by the Continental Army in July of 1776. Miles of earthworks and the site of extensive artillery emplacements, the works here were part of the broader Ticonderoga-Mount Independence camp that successfully withstood a British invasion. The works were invested again in 1777, when American forces retreated in the face of overwhelming numbers. The Vermont State Historic Site offers 6 miles of trails across this historic landscape and exhibits and interpretation of the extensive American military presence from July 1776 to July 1777 that transformed the landscape.
