Situated on Île-aux-Noix in the Richelieu River, Fort Lennox, built by the British between 1819-1828, occupies one of the most strategic sections of the broader Champlain-Richelieu Valley. The island was the site of a French fort besieged in 1760 and in 1776 American forces retreated to Île-aux-Noix where hundreds died of smallpox and fatigue, before retreating back up Lake Champlain. Today the 19th century fortifications have received a major restoration by Parks Canada that manages the site.
