The site of Fort Saint-Jean was fortified as early as 1666. During the American Revolution the fortifications and shipyard were twice the target of American attacks, first in May of 1775 by Benedict Arnold. It was captured by General Richard Montgomery on November 3, 1775, following a grueling siege lasting over a month. The British later re-fortified the site and it was here that they constructed the fleet that fought for control of Lake Champlain. Situated on the grounds of the Royal Military College Saint-Jean the museum documents this extensive history and preserves elements of the Revolutionary War fortifications.
