Lake George Battlefield State Park

At the scenic head of Lake George, the remains of the stone bastion of Fort George sits atop some of the most historic ground in New York State. This was the site of the Battle of Lake George (1755), the first significant victory for the British over the French in the French & Indian War. The location alternated between Patriot and British control until its destruction by the British in 1780. It supported Henry Knox’s movement of artillery from Lake Champlain to Boston in 1775, served as the location of the Continental Army’s largest hospital in 1776 to treat soldiers infected by smallpox, and was utilized by the British as a supply center for General Burgoyne as he moved south to his ultimate defeat in 1777 at Saratoga. The Park and its Visitor Center interpret this extensive story through exhibits, trails, monuments, and markers.
