Occupying the site of French fortifications dating to the late 17th century, the current structure was built between 1709-1711. Serving the French military until 1760, it was later used as a British Garrison. Fort Chambly was captured by Continental forces in October of 1775, one of the first victories of the American invasion of Canada. The fort continued to serve well into the 19th century and today the restored fortification is administered by Parks Canada which interprets its long military history.
