Situated in the heart of old Montréal, the Château Ramezay was built in 1705 as the home of Claude de Ramezay, Governor of Montréal. Between November of 1775 and June of 1776 the residence served as the headquarters of the Continental Army in Canada. American commanders included Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold and the Château welcomed Congressional delegates Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Chase, and Charles Carroll of Carrollton to the occupied city in 1776. The museum and garden interpret the long and complex history of the city of Montréal.
