In August of 1777, the British dispatched a column of mostly German troops to push east toward an American supply depot at Bennington, Vermont for provisions and to rally loyalist support. That force was stopped and annihilated by a large American army, mostly militia from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont, under the command of General John Stark. The Battle of the Walloomsac, not actually fought in Bennington, turned the tide against the British invaders and buoyed American hopes after a summer of defeats. The site preserves the battle’s key locations with trails across the rolling hills and forests of the Walloomsac Valley.
